Can the Tampa Bay Lightning Afford to Retain Defenseman Darren Raddysh?

NHL Insider Dave Pagnotta recently discussed the future of defenseman Darren Raddysh, a pending unrestricted free agent, on Sirius XM NHL Network Radio. The key question revolves around whether Raddysh will sign an extension with the Tampa Bay Lightning or test the open market on July 1st.

Pagnotta, alongside hosts Steve Kouleas and Carter Hutton, highlighted Raddysh’s significant contributions, noting a recent three-point performance that turned a game around. With 20 goals and 64 points on the season, Raddysh is poised for a substantial pay increase from his current career earnings of $4.6 million.

According to Pagnotta, Raddysh is expected to secure a lucrative contract, a reward for his impressive development over the past few seasons. While few anticipated his offensive explosion, his game has consistently improved, benefiting from the opportunities provided by Tampa Bay to showcase his talents. Discussions are reportedly underway, with some suggesting a contract similar to JJ Moser’s recent deal. However, Pagnotta questions the realism of such a high figure for Tampa Bay, although conversations are ongoing.

Should Raddysh reach July 1st without a new deal, he would emerge as the most sought-after defenseman in the free-agent market. The Lightning, who were reportedly seeking defensemen with term before the trade deadline, face a strategic decision. If they aim to re-sign Raddysh, it would likely require a long-term commitment. While a $6 million annual average value (AAV) might be challenging for the Lightning, a range of $4.5 million to $5 million per year could be more feasible for the team.

Raddysh is concluding a two-year contract with a modest $975,000 AAV, meaning he is in line for a significant salary bump. Despite the anticipated rise in the salary cap, paying Raddysh a contract comparable to Moser’s — an eight-year extension at $6.75 million AAV — may prove difficult for the Lightning.

General Manager Julien BriseBois is known for adhering to a specific financial threshold when negotiating contracts. Players either accept his offer or explore options elsewhere. A factor in Raddysh’s decision will be his success within Jon Cooper’s system and whether he believes he can replicate that performance with another organization.
