Wayne Rooney ‘Beyond Belief’ at Nuno Espirito Santo’s FA Cup Team Selection

Football News

Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney has strongly criticized Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo for his team selection in the FA Cup quarter-final.

Forest progressed to the semi-finals of the FA Cup after defeating Brighton in a penalty shootout, following a 0-0 draw. This victory gives them a chance to win their first major trophy in 35 years.

However, Nuno`s decision to start the match with several key players on the bench, including Callum Hudson-Odoi, Anthony Elanga, and Ibrahim Sangare, while fielding Danilo and Nicolas Dominguez, has drawn criticism.

Rooney expressed his “shock” at Nuno`s choice, especially considering Nottingham Forest`s strong position to win the FA Cup, with most of the top Premier League clubs already eliminated, except for Manchester City.

Rooney, a former manager himself, acknowledged Nottingham Forest`s ambition to qualify for the Champions League.

Nevertheless, the Manchester United all-time top scorer, who won the FA Cup in 2016, insisted that it is crucial for key players to maintain their form and winning mentality.

Speaking to the BBC, Rooney said: “I’m shocked. I think the FA Cup is a very important competition, and to rest players in the quarter-final when you have a real chance to reach the semi-finals… it’s unbelievable for me.”

“They are aiming for Champions League qualification, which is understandable and fantastic.”

“But from a player`s perspective, you want to play every game, build momentum, and maintain a winning habit.”

“To leave those players out… If I were a supporter, I would be very disappointed. You want to win trophies, and this was a golden opportunity.”

“To not play them when winning on Tuesday is not guaranteed, it’s beyond belief in my opinion.”

Nuno, who is currently without his leading scorer Chris Wood due to injury, explained his team selection prior to the game.

The former Tottenham manager stated that cup matches provide a valuable chance for players who have had limited Premier League minutes to play.

Nuno commented: “The cup is always a good opportunity for players who work hard but haven`t played much in the Premier League; we stick to this philosophy.”

“Taiwo [Awoniyi] and Danilo have both trained well and deserve to play.”

Ultimately, Nuno`s decisions proved successful as Forest won and progressed to their first FA Cup semi-final in 34 years.
