Virgil van Dijk has committed to Liverpool for another two years, signing a new contract that reportedly establishes him as the highest-paid defender in European football.
This announcement follows closely on the heels of Mohamed Salah`s contract renewal last week, marking a period of securing key players for Liverpool.
Van Dijk`s previous contract with the Anfield club was set to expire this summer. However, following successful negotiations, the 33-year-old has agreed to extend his tenure until 2027.
Expressing his enthusiasm about the new deal to club media, the Liverpool captain conveyed his happiness and pride. He described the extension as incredible, reflecting on his journey with the club and his joy at continuing for another two years.
According to reports from The Athletic, Van Dijk`s new contract will see him earning £400,000 per week. This salary surpasses that of Real Madrid`s David Alaba, who is reported to earn just under £360,000 weekly, making Van Dijk the best-paid defender in Europe.
While Van Dijk`s earnings are substantial, they remain below those of Al-Hilal`s Kalidou Koulibaly, who reportedly earns over £550,000 per week.
Van Dijk emphasized his unwavering loyalty to Liverpool, stating it was always his priority and plan to stay with the club. He dismissed any doubts about his future, affirming Liverpool as the right place for him and his family. He embraced the connection with the city, proudly acknowledging being called an “adopted Scouser.”
To date, Van Dijk has made 314 appearances for Liverpool, contributing 27 goals and 13 assists. His recent crucial goal against West Ham brought Liverpool closer to securing the Premier League title.
A title win this season would see Liverpool equal Manchester United`s record of 20 English league titles and mark Van Dijk`s second league title with the club, following their success in the 2019/20 season.
Since joining Liverpool, Van Dijk has also added a Champions League title, FA Cup, Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, Community Shield, and two League Cups to his trophy cabinet.
With both Van Dijk and Salah`s contracts secured, attention may turn to Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose contract situation has been subject to speculation, with reports linking him to Real Madrid upon expiry of his Liverpool contract this summer.
