The San Antonio Spurs mounted a remarkable comeback, overcoming a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game. Victor Wembanyama gave his team the lead for the first time in nearly two quarters with a three-pointer, making it 104-102 with 57 seconds remaining.
In the closing seconds, during a fast break, Wembanyama made a crucial error, a behind-the-back pass that went astray to Stephon Castle. He then fouled Jalen Brunson, who sank one of his two free throws, giving the Knicks a 7.5-second lead. Consequently, the French star missed the opportunity to secure the victory. Karl-Anthony Towns looked to the heavens as if thanking a higher power for thwarting the final attempt.
Wembanyama led all scorers with 29 points, 22 of which were in the second half. He also contributed 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 4 blocks. Karl-Anthony Towns had a strong showing with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Brunson and Mikal Bridges each scored 20 points for the Knicks.
“I made a mistake, we should have won this game, this game was ours. But I’ll use it to motivate myself and the team… We can’t change the past, we’re already thinking about Game 3,” stated Victor Wembanyama.
