PFL lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov appears to be on the verge of exploring free agency, which could position him as one of the most significant free agents in recent mixed martial arts history.
Nurmagomedov’s next appearance will be to defend his PFL lightweight title against the undefeated Archie Colgan on July 31st. This bout marks the final fight on his current contract, opening up a wide array of opportunities. These possibilities include signing with the UFC, renewing his contract with the PFL, joining Scott Coker’s new league, or even considering MVP MMA.
Given the Nurmagomedov name and his impressive record, it’s highly probable that major organizations will show interest and extend offers. Ultimately, the decision on his future rests solely with Nurmagomedov.
In a recent conversation, Usman Nurmagomedov shared his thoughts on what lies ahead as he prepares for his return to competition.
Usman Nurmagomedov Discusses His Mixed Martial Arts Future
“I’ve already had 12 fights in Bellator and the PFL, and I’m very grateful for that,” Nurmagomedov stated to MMA Junkie. “I love it. We have a very good relationship with the PFL team. I’m not sure what will happen next. As of today, I haven’t signed anything. I have one fight left – this upcoming one. Then we’ll see.”
“I have no problem staying with the PFL. I love the PFL, and let’s see. Let’s see if I put on my best performance. I believe many people will be interested in me. First and foremost, it will be the PFL. I can’t say anything definitive now because this is Ali’s job. I think he’ll figure it out. … I’ll go out there, do my job, and if someone offers me good money, we’ll stay.”
The lightweight division has consistently been a breeding ground for elite talent in the sport. While Usman still has much to accomplish to reach the very top tier, he undoubtedly possesses the potential for significant success at 155 pounds.
Meanwhile, the PFL must seriously evaluate how much they are willing to invest in one of their prominent stars to maintain their relevance in the MMA landscape.
