Tottenham legend Graham Roberts has voiced his criticism of Cristian Romero, implying that the defender seems to prioritize his national team duties over his commitment to Tottenham Hotspur.
Romero, who serves as vice-captain for Spurs, has not played a full 90 minutes in a Premier League game since November 10th. This absence is attributed to ongoing issues with toe and quadriceps injuries.

The 26-year-old Argentine defender was substituted in the 68th minute during Tottenham`s match against Fulham, with the score still tied at 0-0. Ultimately, Spurs lost the game 2-0. This substitution occurred just before an international break.
Despite being taken off early for Tottenham, Romero went on to play the entire 90 minutes in both of Argentina`s subsequent matches against Uruguay and Brazil within the next ten days. This decision has sparked frustration among some Tottenham fans and, notably, former player Graham Roberts.
Roberts, 65, who celebrated FA Cup victories with Tottenham in the early 1980s, shared his thoughts with Mr Vegas Casino: “I am baffled that he only played 60 minutes for us and then went on to play two full 90-minute games for his country. It simply doesn`t make sense to me.”
“I’m not pleased about it because Tottenham and manager Ange Postecoglou have been carefully managing his fitness.”
“If he was fit enough to start against Fulham, he should have been able to play the entire match.”
“I understand that they are also being cautious with Micky van de Ven, but he didn’t even travel for international duty. He was on the bench against Fulham but didn`t play.”
“I am disappointed in Romero’s actions. If he had played just 60 minutes in each international game, it would be a different situation. But playing full games after being rested by Spurs… it`s hard to understand.”
“The club is responsible for his salary and well-being. This situation is a major letdown.”
For a significant portion of his time at Tottenham, Romero has faced accusations of prioritizing his national team over his club commitments.
However, during a pre-season interview in Australia two years prior, when questioned by reporters, Romero firmly dismissed these claims, defending his dedication to Spurs.
Romero stated at the time: “I believe those who suggest this don`t truly know me. I am under contract with this club for many more years, and I consistently strive to give my absolute best.”
“If I didn’t feel the same level of passion for Spurs as I do for Argentina, I would seek to leave the club.”
A departure for Romero from Tottenham this summer appears to be a possibility, with fellow Argentinian Diego Simeone reportedly interested in bringing him to Atletico Madrid.
Roberts would be disheartened to see the dynamic defender leave, considering him among the Premier League`s elite defenders. He cautioned potential clubs that acquiring Romero, who was initially bought for £42.5 million, would require a substantial investment.
Speaking to via Mr Vegas Online Casino, Roberts commented: “I would argue that he and Virgil van Dijk are currently the two best central defenders in the league.”
“However, his susceptibility to injuries is a concern. Micky van de Ven also experiences frequent injuries. I wonder if our high-pressing style of play is too demanding on their bodies.”
“Nevertheless, the fact remains that Romero is in the top tier with Van Dijk. He has proven his quality, and he is a World Cup winner.”
“I’ve always believed that the club badge on the front of the shirt is more important than any player’s name on the back.”
“If he is unhappy and wants to leave, that is his decision, but he cannot simply walk away. Another club would have to buy him, and he will not come cheap.”
“There are certainly other players out there who could potentially replace him. I am confident that the recruitment department is fully aware of the situation.”
“Simeone’s interest in him is understandable given their shared Argentinian background. If a player’s head is turned, a move becomes more likely.”
“(But) things could change. If we were to win the Europa League and secure Champions League qualification, the situation might look different.”
