Top Seed Elina Svitolina Wins in Rouen, Ending Two-Year Title Wait

Sports News

Elina Svitolina, the top-ranked player in the tournament, celebrated her first victory in almost two years on Sunday, winning the WTA 250 Open Capfinances Rouen Métropole.

Svitolina from Ukraine, seeded number one, defeated Serbia`s Olga Danilovic, the third seed, with scores of 6-4, 7-6(8). The final match lasted nearly two hours and was played on indoor clay courts in Rouen, France.

In a tense second set tiebreaker, Svitolina fought off two set points at 4-6 before securing victory on her fourth championship point.

This win improves Svitolina`s impressive record in WTA finals. The former world number three has now reached 22 tour-level finals and won 18 of them.

Svitolina`s previous title was in Strasbourg in May 2023, shortly after returning from maternity leave. Until this week, she had not won another tournament.

Since Strasbourg, her only final appearance was as a runner-up at Auckland in January 2024, where she narrowly lost to Coco Gauff in three sets.

However, Svitolina`s debut at the Rouen tournament was a success, as she won the title without losing a single set throughout the week. Notably, seven of her 18 titles have been on clay.
