After two previous times finishing as runner-up, Dalma Galfi has finally become a WTA 125 champion. The Hungarian player, who was not seeded in the tournament, overcame No. 2 seed Katie Volynets from the United States with a score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 to win the Oeiras Ladies Open title in Oeiras, Portugal.
The weather with rain affected the schedule throughout the week, but the clay-court tournament was successfully completed on Sunday. The event concluded with Galfi`s victory in a final match that lasted 2 hours and 13 minutes.
Galfi, aged 26, expressed her joy in an Instagram post, stating, `Third time’s the charm,` while celebrating her most significant professional victory to date.
In her previous WTA 125 finals appearances, Galfi was defeated by Sara Errani at Contrexeville in 2022 and by Darja Semenistaja earlier this month at La Bisbal d`Emporda. All of her WTA 125 finals have been played on clay courts, and each one has gone to three sets.
In this recent match, Galfi managed to recover after losing the first set and took control in the following two sets. She successfully defended against all four break points she faced in the second and third sets.
Throughout the tournament, Galfi only lost a single set, which was the first set of the final match. She has achieved victory in nine of her last ten matches, with the Oeiras title coming two weeks after her final appearance at La Bisbal d`Emporda.
Galfi, currently ranked No. 149, is expected to climb closer to the Top 120 in the updated rankings this week. Having been the 2015 ITF Junior World Champion and Junior US Open champion, Galfi reached her highest PIF WTA ranking of No. 79 in 2022.
Also on Sunday, Portuguese sisters Francisca and Matilde Jorge successfully defended their Oeiras Ladies Open doubles title in their home country.
The Jorge sisters had won their most significant title at this same event last year. This year, as the No. 2 seeds, they repeated their success by defeating Anastasia Detiuc and Patricia Maria Tig, who were unseeded, with a score of 6-1, 6-2 in a final that lasted 63 minutes.
