Swiatek clears the air: Wimbledon is still on the calendar

Sports News

Following her challenging defeat to Coco Gauff in the Madrid Open semifinals last week (6-1, 6-1), Iga Swiatek faced a flood of speculation online. However, speaking on Tuesday, the Polish star clarified that the widespread conjecture on social media was far from accurate. Swiatek firmly denied ever seriously considering cancelling her upcoming grass-court season.

“During the past few days,” Swiatek told reporters at the Internazionali d’Italia in Rome, “I saw millions of comments that were not true. There are so many theories right now, I would say especially in Polish media about me, that are not true.”

As a four-time Roland Garros champion and the current World No. 2, Swiatek acknowledges the public interest that comes with her status in the sport.

She commented on the nature of media coverage, stating, “You guys like to make some articles that will attract people — I get it. It`s part of the job.”

Swiatek went on to explicitly confirm her plans for the grass season, putting the rumors to rest. “But yeah, for sure I`m not going to skip Wimbledon. I really want to learn how to play on grass better. Every year is another opportunity. I will play Wimbledon, for sure, unless I get injured.”

Swiatek`s professional record at Wimbledon stands at 11 wins and 5 losses (.688 winning percentage). This is less dominant compared to her performances at the other three Grand Slams: Roland Garros (35-2, .946), US Open (20-5, .800), and Australian Open (22-7, .759). Interestingly, Swiatek`s only junior singles Grand Slam title came at Wimbledon in 2018.
