Evreux President Jean-Pascal Ruiz: "We Need a New Arena"

ALM Evreux, a club with a rich history in French basketball's LNB since 1987, is currently in a favorable position to secure its spot in the division. However, President Jean-Pascal Ruiz emphasizes that merely maintaining their status isn't enough; the club needs significant growth to aspire to more than just staying afloat.

Ruiz highlights the club's position as the 'underdog' of the league, operating with the smallest payroll (€510,000) and budget (around €2 million). "It's challenging to recruit," he states, explaining that they often play with fewer players than their competitors and lack the financial flexibility for mid-season adjustments. While a 'development' SAS has been successful in attracting private shareholders, boosting partner numbers from 60 to 180, Ruiz stresses that the club's very existence still relies heavily on the support of the city, department, and region. He also advocates for strengthening ties with local amateur clubs and businesses.

A major impediment to ALM Evreux's progress is its home ground, the Jean-Fourré Omnisports hall. Opened in 1962 and seating 3,400, the arena is deeply cherished for its "mythical" status and "cauldron-like" atmosphere. Yet, Ruiz firmly believes it's time for a change. "Even if we all adore our hall, it's iconic, a real hotbed, we are forced to move on," he explains.

The need for a new facility extends beyond just the basketball club, as they share the current venue with Évreux VB. Ruiz expresses optimism regarding the city's commitment to building a new arena, a project championed by Mayor Guy Lefrand. He understands the complexities involved, drawing parallels to his own experiences taking over ALM. "One has certainties, one imagines what one can do, what one must do, except that one discovers that not everything is so easy," he reflects. Ruiz remains confident that the new arena will be a reality by the end of the current mayoral term, viewing it as a crucial step for the club's future development and ambition.
