Welbeck won a Premier League title with Manchester United but was transferred to Arsenal a year after Ferguson retired in 2013.

Leading up to this weekend`s FA Cup quarter-finals, Welbeck shared that Sir Alex Ferguson, 83, reached out to him after he scored against Newcastle in the previous round.

In an interview with the BBC, Welbeck mentioned, “Sir Alex Ferguson actually called me after the Newcastle goal.”

“He spoke about the goal and my performance.”

“It`s great to maintain that connection. He is a manager who always cares about his players and wants the best for them, and he still keeps in touch.”

Welbeck`s excellent goal in extra time against Newcastle secured Brighton`s place in the quarter-final against Nottingham Forest this Saturday.

This season has been productive for the former England international at Brighton, with seven Premier League goals from 17 starts.

His goal against Newcastle even prompted Wayne Rooney, his former Manchester United teammate, to praise him.

Rooney, Manchester United`s all-time top scorer, 39, commented, “Danny is great to play with.”

“To be honest, I would still like to see him playing here, for Manchester United.”

“He has scored goals throughout his career. He had some injury problems earlier on, but he seems to be past them and is having a fantastic season.”

Welbeck recently revealed that he is part of a WhatsApp group with former Manchester United players.

He told Sky Sports, “Everyone contributes. There`s a lot of banter, chats about football, and a lot of jokes.”

When asked about who the group admin is, Welbeck responded, “I think it might be Rio Ferdinand.”

“He just loves to talk, doesn`t he? You know what he`s like; he just chats and chats.”

“He enjoys it. He`s made a career out of talking now, so… we give him a lot of stick too.”
