Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet recently addressed the topic of draft pick valuation in trades, specifically questioning whether the conditions attached to these picks should be publicly disclosed without delay.
During a discussion with Gord Stellick and Scott Laughlin on Sirius XM NHL Network Radio, Stellick brought up the general inclination of teams to undervalue late first-round picks and their readiness to include them in trade deadline deals. He also pondered if the league might reconsider rules regarding draft pick protection, such as excluding top-5 or top-10 picks from certain trade conditions, especially in scenarios where teams unexpectedly miss the playoffs. Stellick hypothesized that recent trade complexities might prompt general managers to adopt a more cautious approach moving forward.
Friedman suggested that this trend will likely lead teams to negotiate for increased protection within their trade agreements. He drew a parallel to ongoing discussions in the NBA, where significant tanking issues have sparked ideas, though still in the brainstorming phase, about limiting how frequently teams can trade first-round picks.
Regarding the NHL, Friedman expressed his belief that much of the current decision-making around trades is a form of self-policing by general managers. He cited Toronto’s decision to accept a conditional pick risk, acknowledging that such gambles can have significant repercussions. However, he doesn’t necessarily think the league needs to regulate or strictly moderate these trade structures.
His strong conviction, nevertheless, is that “if there are conditional picks, they have to be clear what they are.” Friedman voiced his frustration over past incidents, such as the Florida-Chicago trade, where it wasn’t publicly revealed for an entire year that Florida held top-10 protection on a particular pick. He found it unacceptable that official press releases from both the Blackhawks and Panthers at the time of the trade contained no mention of such critical conditions. Friedman concluded that the conditions on draft picks should be explicitly transparent and announced at the time a trade is made public.
