Sean Strickland Regains Middleweight Title in UFC 328 Upset Over Khamzat Chimaev

Sean Strickland has once again claimed the middleweight world championship, delivering a surprising performance at UFC 328 to defeat Khamzat Chimaev.

The fight saw an aggressive start from Chimaev, who secured an early takedown within the first 20 seconds, transitioning to Strickland’s back. While “Borz” maintained dominant position throughout the round, offensive output was minimal.

In the second round, Chimaev attempted another takedown, but Strickland successfully sprawled and established top control. After landing some effective strikes, Strickland allowed Chimaev to return to his feet. Chimaev’s subsequent attempt to clinch and go for a takedown backfired, leading to Strickland gaining top control near the fence and delivering a barrage of strikes until the end of the round.

By the third round, with Chimaev showing signs of fatigue, the fight shifted to a stand-up battle. Both fighters exchanged blows, but Strickland was more active, consistently utilizing his jab. Chimaev continued to abandon his grappling in the fourth round, which seemed to aid Strickland, the defending champion, in conserving energy. Chimaev varied his strikes, causing Strickland’s nose to bleed. Strickland maintained his effective jab, prompting Chimaev to eventually shoot for another takedown. He managed to secure it with less than a minute remaining, accumulating control time until the bell.

With the fight potentially tied at two rounds apiece heading into the final round, it became a winner-take-all scenario. Chimaev initiated the fifth round with a takedown attempt, bringing Strickland to the canvas. Strickland gradually worked his way back to his feet and disengaged before resuming his jab. Chimaev engaged in striking until the final minute, when he secured another takedown on “Tarzan.” Strickland broke free with 35 seconds left but couldn’t land any significant strikes in the remaining time.

The outcome was decided on the judges’ scorecards.

Official Result: Sean Strickland defeated Khamzat Chimaev via split decision (47-48, 48-47, 48-47) to become the UFC middleweight world champion.

The fight showcased a tactical battle, with Strickland’s effective striking and defensive resilience proving crucial against Chimaev’s wrestling and powerful shots. The split decision victory marks a significant moment in the middleweight division.
