The Women`s Tennis Association (WTA) has announced that Sao Paulo, Brazil, is set to rejoin the Hologic WTA Tour calendar in September 2025. This marks the tour`s return to the city for the first time in 25 years.
The new tournament, named the WTA 250 SP Open, is scheduled to take place during the week of September 8. It will assume the calendar spot previously held by the Jasmin Open in Monastir. The event will feature competition on outdoor hard courts, including a 32-player singles main draw and a 16-team doubles draw.
Sao Paulo last hosted a WTA tournament in the year 2000, which was the Brasil Open. In that event, the singles title was claimed by Rita Kuti-Kis of Hungary, while the doubles championship went to the Argentine duo of Laura Montalvo and Paola Suarez.
The announcement of Sao Paulo`s comeback follows an exciting and dynamic start to the 2025 season. The season has already seen remarkable variety, with 15 different players winning singles titles across the various WTA 250, 500, and 1000 level events. A significant moment was Mirra Andreeva`s historic victory, making her the youngest-ever champion of a WTA 1000 tournament.
This thrilling beginning to the year, coupled with the recent launch of the WTA`s updated brand identity, has notably boosted the tour`s social media engagement. By the end of March, the WTA`s follower count on social platforms had grown by 25% year-over-year. Total video views during the first quarter also saw a substantial increase of 163%.
