Roy Keane’s Cautious Opinion on Thomas Tuchel’s England Debut

Football News

Roy Keane remained reserved in his praise for Thomas Tuchel, despite the new England manager securing victories in his first two World Cup qualifying matches.

Tuchel achieved a milestone, becoming the first England boss since Fabio Capello to win his initial two games, following a 3-0 victory over Latvia on Monday.

Reece James marked his first international start in 18 months with a stunning 25-yard free-kick.

Prior to that, England faced frustration against Latvia`s defensive setup, before Harry Kane scored his 71st international goal, and Eberechi Eze celebrated his first international goal.

Tuchel`s team dominated with 27 shots compared to Latvia`s three, with eight shots on target, securing their position at the top of Group K with six points.

However, Keane, analyzing for ITV, was not overly impressed, suggesting England should have secured the win earlier in the match.

Keane stated to ITV, "If this were a school report, Tuchel would receive a C+."

"I believe there is much more potential to unlock. The initial two matches appeared straightforward on paper."

"It`s a positive beginning for the manager, but realistically, two wins were expected, considering the 27 shots taken tonight."

"There are numerous areas needing improvement. The final execution wasn`t exceptional, although substitutions did bring a positive change to the game."

"But overall, it was just satisfactory, nothing more."

Keane also criticized Jordan Pickford during halftime for his role in a defensive mix-up with Marc Guehi when the score was still 0-0.

Tuchel, whose debut game resulted in a 2-0 victory against Albania on Friday, made four changes to the starting lineup.

James, Guehi, Jarrod Bowen, and Morgan Rogers were included in the starting XI, as Tuchel explored different player combinations.

Kyle Walker, Dan Burn, Curtis Jones, and Phil Foden were among those who did not start, with Foden having faced criticism from Keane on Friday.

Mark Pougatch engaged Keane and Ian Wright in a discussion about squad rotation and the strategy of a manager assessing different players or providing rest to key players.

Keane`s response was characteristically direct.

He commented: "I am a strong advocate for squad rotation. I supported it… once I was playing!" Pougatch laughingly questioned, "You didn`t actually believe in it?"

"No, not for my position," Keane joked with a smirk, adding, "You can rotate everyone else!"

"Seriously, I understand the broader perspective. But, echoing Ian`s point, you need to perform well enough that you become indispensable. Rotate others, not me!"

This match marked the first instance in 33 years where an England team played without any players from Manchester United, Manchester City, or Liverpool.

Interestingly, it was also the first time in 33 years that an England defender scored directly from a free-kick at Wembley since Stuart Pearce against Turkey in 1992.

Keane, known for his sharp remarks, also took a jab at Arsenal during halftime.

He praised Myles Lewis-Skelly for earning the free-kick for James in the 38th minute.

Keane quipped: "Lewis-Skelly here… he has clearly mastered that skill at Arsenal over the years. It`s a 50-50 situation."
