Robbie Savage Secures Promotion for Macclesfield FC in Debut Season

Football News

Robbie Savage, a well-known TNT SPORTS commentator, has successfully led Macclesfield FC to promotion in his very first attempt as manager.

A 2-1 victory over Bamber Bridge on Saturday secured the Northern Premier League team`s advancement to the National League North for the upcoming season.

This achievement marks a remarkable first season for Savage, the former Manchester United midfielder, accomplishing promotion with six league matches still ahead.

Macclesfield FC, established as a phoenix club after the dissolution of Macclesfield Town, currently holds a commanding 20-point lead over their closest rivals, Worksop.

Under Savage`s leadership, the team has been dominant, winning 29 out of 36 matches, scoring an impressive 88 goals, and conceding only 26.

Their outstanding performance guarantees them the Northern Premier League title, regardless of their results in the remaining six fixtures.

Savage took over managing the Silkmen last summer, succeeding Michael Clegg, who previously led the team to a second-place finish and a play-off final loss.

Already a co-owner of Macclesfield FC since its creation in 2020, Savage`s successful season raises questions about his future role, especially after his prior statement about stepping down if promotion wasn`t achieved.

In August, he stated, “If I fail, I know my time will be up.”

“I won’t be able to return to a director of football role, observing from the stands if I don`t deliver. I`m fully aware of the stakes.”

“The initial reactions to my appointment were quite harsh and unpleasant. It was a tough summer.”

“However, this team is play-off bound, and I am confident we will get promoted. But if we don’t, I will resign from my managerial position, take a step back as co-owner, and watch from a distance.”

“Many might expect me to fail, but if that happens, it won’t be due to lack of dedication.”

Robert Smethurst, owner of Macclesfield FC, believes Savage’s success might attract attention from larger clubs.

He mentioned to the BBC, "It`s uncertain how long he will remain at Macclesfield.

"We might be fortunate to have him for another year. He is already attracting interest from bigger clubs in higher leagues.

"It’s only a matter of time before his abilities are recognized, and he moves beyond Macclesfield. I am prepared for that possibility.”
