Power outage halts play at Madrid; remaining matches pushed to Tuesday

Sports News

A widespread power outage occurred at the Mutua Madrid Open in Madrid, halting play on a day when all 16 remaining women were scheduled to compete.

Media reports indicated the blackout was extensive, affecting not only Spain but also a significant part of Europe, impacting millions of people. The initial cause was unclear, though early reports suggested issues with the European electricity grid.

Only two of the eight scheduled women`s fourth-round matches were completed just before the power went out shortly after noon.

In the completed matches, World No. 4 Coco Gauff defeated Belinda Bencic with a score of 6-4, 6-2. Additionally, World No. 7 seed Mirra Andreeva was victorious over qualifier Yuliia Starodubtseva, winning 6-1, 6-4.

World No. 2 Iga Swiatek was observed in the darkened players` lounge, conversing with her team. Swiatek had been awaiting the conclusion of the suspended men`s match between Grigor Dimitrov and qualifier Jacob Fearnley at Manolo Santana Stadium.

All remaining matches for the day were subsequently cancelled and rescheduled for Tuesday.
