Canada loves hockey, but it`s been a while since a Canadian team brought home the Stanley Cup.

It`s been over 30 years since a Canadian team won the NHL championship. Back in 1992-93, the Montreal Canadiens, with stars like Brian Bellows and Patrick Roy, dominated the playoffs to win their 24th Stanley Cup.

Since then, only seven Canadian teams have reached the finals, but none have won. In the 2025 playoffs, the Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets, and Toronto Maple Leafs are all hoping to break this long drought.

The world was very different when the Canadiens last won. Let`s look at what pop culture was like in 1993.

`Jurassic Park` Dominates Movie Theaters

While `Jurassic Park` movies are common now, the original 1993 film directed by Steven Spielberg was groundbreaking. With a stellar cast including Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum, and amazing special effects blending practical and CGI, it created incredibly realistic dinosaurs. The movie was a huge hit, earning nearly a billion dollars and winning Oscars for sound and visual effects.

The Term `Spam` is Coined

Unwanted mass messages existed before, but 1993 is when they got the name `spam.` After a user accidentally sent many messages to a newsgroup, the term `spam` was used to describe it, and it stuck.

Michael Jackson`s Super Bowl Halftime Show Stuns

Super Bowl XXVII saw the Dallas Cowboys beat the Buffalo Bills. But the highlight was Michael Jackson`s halftime performance. His iconic entrance and medley of hits like `Billie Jean` captivated the audience and boosted the Super Bowl ratings.

`Doom` Revolutionizes Video Games

1993 was a huge year for video games, with titles like Myst and Star Fox launching. But `Doom` was perhaps the most impactful. This first-person shooter with 3D graphics and intense multiplayer became a phenomenon, even getting banned on some university networks due to its popularity.
