Pep Guardiola Suggests Break or Retirement Post-Man City Era

Football News

Pep Guardiola has indicated he will take a break or potentially retire from football management after his current contract with Manchester City concludes.

The 54-year-old manager joined Man City in 2016 and extended his contract last November, committing him to the club until 2027.

Guardiola, widely considered one of the greatest managers in history, might step away from the game when his deal expires.

He stated he feels he will need a break from the dugout after leaving City, having begun his managerial journey 18 years ago.

Speaking to ESPN Brazil, Guardiola said: “I want people to remember me however they want. After my contract with City, I`m going to stop. I`m sure. I don`t know if I`m going to retire, but I`m going to take a break. How I want to be remembered, I don`t know.”

He feels that while winning creates memorable careers for coaches, he believes fans of his former clubs (Barcelona, Bayern Munich) and current club (City) enjoyed watching his teams` style of play.

Guardiola reflected that he doesn`t think about how he`ll be remembered, suggesting that legacies are fleeting. He noted that in coaching careers, some are remembered longer than others, but ultimately, personal perspective is more important than public opinion.

He acknowledged the constant new challenges in coaching and stated he is uncertain about his future beyond 2027, suggesting the unknown doesn`t concern him.

Despite these comments about stopping, when questioned further, Guardiola did not entirely rule out staying at City beyond 2027, mentioning possibilities of finishing in “one year, two years, three years, five years, six years,” suggesting flexibility or uncertainty.

Guardiola has achieved significant success, winning 18 trophies with Man City and accumulating a total of 40 major titles throughout his spells at City, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona. His extensive honour list includes six Premier League titles, three La Liga and Bundesliga titles each, ten domestic cups, and three Champions League titles.

Beyond team achievements, he has been individually recognized as the World`s Best Coach by FIFA three times.

Guardiola has also made history, notably leading Man City to four consecutive Premier League titles and being the first manager whose team achieved over 100 points in a single Premier League season.

According to the interview cited, City had an unusual season this term, reportedly dropping out of title contention early and focusing on securing European football. Despite this, they secured a place in the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace, aiming for Guardiola`s third FA Cup win. Reflecting on the challenging campaign, including a poor winter run, Guardiola described it as “a year of great learning.” He mentioned multiple reasons for the difficulty, including his own incorrect decisions.

He added that while it`s commonly thought more is learned from losses, he believes he also learns from wins.

Guardiola stated he anticipated a dip in form but didn`t expect it to be as significant, acknowledging that sustained success is impossible.

He concluded by saying the team`s performance over the previous nine or ten years was exceptional, but they now need to analyze and understand what is required going forward.
