Top-seeded Jessica Pegula showcased resilience and skill to win the Credit One Charleston Open, defeating fellow American Sofia Kenin in a compelling final. Pegula rallied from a second-set setback to secure a 6-3, 7-5 victory on Sunday.
The all-American final, the first in Charleston in two decades, appeared headed for a decisive third set when Kenin, the 2020 Australian Open champion, surged to a 5-1 lead in the second set after losing the first. However, Pegula demonstrated her tenacity, saving three set points in the crucial seventh game of the second set. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of Pegula`s comeback as she claimed six consecutive games to seize her second title of the season, adding to her WTA 250 win in Austin last month.
Pegula also exhibited a similar comeback in the first set, overturning a 0-2 start to establish a 3-2 lead, ultimately winning the set.
Reflecting on her victory in a Tennis Channel interview, Pegula acknowledged the challenging conditions and her fatigue. She noted Kenin`s elevated play and the difficulty of maintaining focus in the windy conditions. Pegula emphasized her determination to hold serve in the second set, aiming to gain momentum for a potential third set, though she managed to break Kenin twice to secure the win in two sets.
Pegula`s recent form has been outstanding, with 17 wins in her last 19 matches. Her five victories this week contribute to a season total of 25, currently the highest on the Hologic WTA Tour. Her Charleston Open triumph propels her to a career-high World No. 3 ranking on Monday, surpassing Coco Gauff as the top-ranked American player.
