Oliver Glasner Halts New Crystal Palace Contract Discussions Over Transfer Strategy

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner is reportedly holding off on signing a new contract extension at the club. His decision is said to depend on how seriously the board is prepared to support him in the upcoming transfer market.

The Austrian coach has achieved considerable success since arriving in south London, notably guiding the team to what is described as the club`s first major trophy with an FA Cup triumph, defying expectations.

Following his FA Cup win, Glasner has been linked with potential moves elsewhere, but he recently publicly confirmed his intention to remain at Selhurst Park for the next season.

However, with his current agreement set to expire in just over a year, Glasner appears to be in no rush to commit his long-term future just yet.

Sources close to the situation indicate that the manager wants concrete assurances that key summer signings will be completed efficiently and without delay before advancing contract talks to the next stage.

An insider at Crystal Palace commented: “He has a year left on his contract and is just waiting to see how this summer goes before signing a new one. He was very critical of last summer’s business, so the pressure is on [Chairman Steve] Parish to ensure deals are finalised in good time for pre-season training.

“Waiting until the very last couple of days to bring in four players wasn’t ideal at all.”

Indeed, players like Eddie Nketiah, Maxence Lacroix, Matt Turner, and Trevoh Chalobah were reportedly signed by the club on transfer deadline day last summer.

Glasner himself addressed the issue last season, stating in a press conference: “It’s not a public discussion – I’ve already mentioned it several times. We could have done better in the transfer window.

“With four signings on deadline day, it’s not how you wish a transfer window would work.”

The Eagles are aiming to build on their strong finish to the previous campaign. Reports suggest Glasner was open to allowing the departures of key players such as Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi to generate funds for squad rebuilding.

Eze is understood to be attracting interest from Tottenham Hotspur, while Guehi is a reported target for Newcastle United.

Sources have conveyed that Glasner is pushing for significant reinforcements, particularly in midfield and attack, with the goal of helping Palace climb higher in the league standings and potentially competing strongly in the Europa League, stemming from their hypothetical FA Cup victory.

Discussions between Glasner and the Crystal Palace board are ongoing, but currently, the primary focus remains firmly on activity in the transfer window before any formal contract agreements are reached.
