AS Monaco, also known as the Roca Team, has recently faced significant financial challenges, even nearing bankruptcy. This looming threat has raised concerns, prompting General Manager Oleksiy Yefimov to address the situation publicly.
“Firstly, it’s crucial to clarify that the situation is genuinely not as severe as it has been portrayed. The club experienced liquidity issues because our main shareholder’s operations in Ukraine were impacted by ballistic attacks. While this created pressure, it hasn’t altered the fundamental structure of our project. The key is that we have collaborated with Monegasque authorities and basketball institutions to resolve the situation. The club continues to operate, the team remains competitive – we’ve already secured two national titles and just reached the French Cup final – and we are dedicated to strengthening the organization’s stability.”
The recent stabilization appears largely attributable to significant financial aid provided by the Principality in the past week, a crucial support that Yefimov made sure to acknowledge.
“I want to thank the Principality of Monaco for its support. The project received not only financial assistance but also significant institutional backing, which provided much-needed reassurance to everyone. I would also like to thank our sponsors, who stood by the club during this crucial period and even advanced some of their sponsorship payments. My thanks also extend to private donors who, while remaining anonymous, assisted the club during this critical time. Furthermore, I commend our players, coaches, and staff, including our temporary employees, for handling this pressure with great professionalism. Special appreciation goes to our fans. Their support, trust, and belief have been incredible. Our fans have demonstrated that the Roca Team is truly nothing less than Monaco’s national team and a source of pride for the Principality.”
Another crucial topic Yefimov addressed was the club’s future in the EuroLeague, an aspect inevitably brought into question by recent difficulties.
“The National Financing Company has provided support to stabilize the short-term situation, allowing the club to conclude the season without further turbulence. In the meantime, we must actively seek strategic partners and potential investors to strengthen AS Monaco’s long-term sustainability. Constructive dialogue has already begun with several parties who have expressed interest in supporting the project’s continued development. I believe no one doubts that the Roca Team, with the right structure, would be a clear asset to the EuroLeague. Concurrently, to fully restore the league’s confidence, we must demonstrate that the club’s future will be built on a stable and diversified financial model that does not rely solely on the passion or financial contribution of a single individual.”
