NHL Rumors: Pittsburgh Penguins and Florida Panthers Offseason Outlook

NHL News

The Pittsburgh Penguins are reportedly looking to capitalize on their existing cap space and assets this offseason to bring in younger talent, potentially even a marquee player, to accelerate their rebuild. Despite a surprisingly successful season, the team’s long-term strategy remains focused on future acquisitions. While players like Justin Brazeau, Anthony Mantha, Tommy Novak, and Parker Wotherspoon have contributed significantly, the Penguins are wary of overpaying to retain a player like Mantha in a competitive free-agent market, especially considering his age.

Speculation suggests that General Manager Kyle Dubas would undoubtedly explore a trade for Auston Matthews if the Toronto Maple Leafs made him available. However, such a move would require significant assets, potentially including Ben Kindel, and face hurdles like Matthews’ no-movement clause and Dubas’s previous tenure in Toronto. Furthermore, it is widely believed that this will be Evgeni Malkin’s final season with the Penguins.

Florida Panthers’ Offseason Strategy Remains Undecided

Florida Panthers General Manager Bill Zito indicates it’s premature to outline specific offseason moves, emphasizing the dynamic and often unpredictable nature of player availability in both free agency and trades. Zito likened building a roster to an ongoing puzzle, requiring continuous effort and sound decision-making.

Regarding draft picks, the Panthers will retain their first-round pick if they finish in the top 10 after the lottery. Otherwise, their unprotected 2027 first-round pick would transfer to the Chicago Blackhawks (from the Seth Jones trade), and their unprotected 2028 first-round pick would go to the Boston Bruins (from the Brad Marchand trade).

The future of pending unrestricted free agent goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky remains uncertain, with Zito expressing a desire to re-sign him but stating that discussions will occur post-season.
