Montreal Canadiens: Close Calls at the Trade Deadline
During the recent trade deadline, the Montreal Canadiens reportedly pursued a top-line forward. This pursuit, however, was not the “one deal in particular” General Manager Kent Hughes had previously mentioned as going down to the wire. While Nazem Kadri was a player of interest that the Canadiens checked in on, he was not the specific focus of Hughes’s comments regarding the significant, last-minute deal.
The Canadiens were also reportedly on the verge of offloading Patrik Laine’s contract, but the transaction ultimately did not materialize. Furthermore, Montreal came exceptionally close to acquiring a right-handed defenseman with a long-term commitment. All the details for this potential acquisition were reportedly worked out, but the opposing team unexpectedly withdrew from the agreement at the last moment.
Toronto Maple Leafs: Trade Activity and Future Outlook
The Toronto Maple Leafs reportedly entertained offers for a significant portion of their roster at the trade deadline. Forward Bobby McMann, who was eventually traded to Seattle after attracting interest from teams like the Edmonton Oilers, Colorado Avalanche, and Columbus Blue Jackets, along with Scott Laughton (who drew attention from the Tampa Bay Lightning), were moved due to their demands for substantial contract raises.
Conversely, players such as Max Domi, Simon Benoit, and Calle Jarnkrok reportedly garnered minimal interest from other teams. Despite Oliver Ekman-Larsson’s desire to remain with the team, sources indicated that he believed he was destined for a trade on a specific evening. Speculation also surrounded Matthew Knies, with a potential trade described as having “a chance,” though renewed discussions in the offseason are considered unlikely.
Looking ahead, General Manager Brad Treliving is widely expected to retain his position with the Maple Leafs, though a coaching change could be a distinct possibility. The team plans to engage Auston Matthews in offseason discussions regarding the team’s future direction and his long-term commitment. Additionally, a Western Conference team reportedly showed interest in defenseman Morgan Rielly.
