Satiar Shah and Bik Nizzar recently discussed how long the Vancouver Canucks should retain defenseman Filip Hronek to maximize his trade value, which could potentially be equivalent to two first-round draft picks. The central question revolves around how long he can maintain this peak valuation.
Shah acknowledges the imperative to extract maximum value from Hronek. Given the Canucks’ public statements about his leadership qualities and increased engagement with the media, it appears unlikely he will be traded this offseason; he is expected to remain with the team at least until the start of next season. Shah questions: if Hronek stays healthy and continues to perform at his current high level for another year or two, how long can he truly maintain his value, equivalent to two first-round picks?
Nizzar expresses less concern about a potential decline in Hronek’s offensive production. He points out that Hronek’s power play ice time has previously been limited, but with an anticipated larger role on special teams, his offensive output should be consistent, comfortably reaching 35-40+ points. Nizzar believes Hronek will retain his power play role despite competition from younger prospects like Zeev Buium, noting that young players often experience performance dips. Consequently, his offensive production is expected to remain strong. For Nizzar, the primary consideration is the sustained quality of Hronek’s overall game. Nizzar highlights that Hronek has been outstanding this season, performing at a top-pairing or even high-end number two defenseman level consistently. According to Nizzar, the number of games where Hronek has underperformed is remarkably low.
