NHL Rumors: Does Bruce Cassidy Hard Style Wear on Players?

NHL News

Bruce Cassidy has been dismissed as an NHL head coach for the second time in his career. His first dismissal was by the Boston Bruins in the summer of 2022, after which he was quickly hired by the Vegas Golden Knights, who had also parted ways with their coach, Peter DeBoer, that same offseason.

Cassidy arrived in Vegas with a strong reputation, having led the Bruins to within one game of the Stanley Cup in 2019. The Golden Knights had a talented roster, seemingly only needing a coach to maximize their potential. In his inaugural season with Vegas, Cassidy delivered, winning the Stanley Cup. However, despite a solid 60% win record, the team’s performance has reportedly declined since that championship year.

Regardless of whether the issue was roster composition, goaltending, or other factors, the Golden Knights weren’t meeting expectations, prompting GM Kelly McCrimmon to seek a change. This raises the question of whether Cassidy had lost control of the locker room, or if other underlying issues were at play.

According to Hockey Insider Elliotte Friedman, Bruce Cassidy is known for his demanding coaching style, which often creates tension with players. This friction reportedly existed within the Golden Knights locker room since his arrival.

While recognized as a skilled coach, Cassidy’s demanding nature appears to have a pattern; after a few seasons, his intensity seems to wear on players, a trend observed across both of his NHL head coaching stints.

Friedman further elaborated that a particularly tense meeting occurred between Cassidy and several players before Game 5 of last year’s playoff series against Edmonton, which the Oilers won. This incident reportedly strained relationships, despite some players initially agreeing with Cassidy’s approach and management backing him at the time. However, it became apparent this season that Cassidy’s message was no longer resonating, and the player-coach bond had weakened, leading to the decision that a change was necessary.

As is common in player-coach dynamics, relationships can deteriorate over time. GM McCrimmon stated at a recent media briefing that Cassidy had not “lost the room,” but rather the team had lost its “energy and spirit.” Players generally echoed this sentiment, though captain Mark Stone specifically described the locker room atmosphere as “stale.”

Notably, John Tortorella, often cited as another demanding coach, demonstrates that sometimes a fresh voice delivering a similar message can re-energize a team. His coaching style is often effective in motivating players to perform with winning intensity.

This marks the second instance where player discontent with Cassidy’s demanding coaching approach has surfaced. Nevertheless, given his proven track record, Bruce Cassidy is expected to quickly find another coaching opportunity.
