Montreal Canadiens: Offseason Goals and Potential Roster Changes

For the Montreal Canadiens to achieve a deep playoff run, the team needs to enhance its physical presence and become tougher to play against. General Manager Kent Hughes is reportedly focused on acquiring a significant, right-handed defenseman and a substantial power forward capable of playing in the top-six, with these additions likely targeted for the upcoming offseason.

Regarding potential player movement, speculation surrounds Patrik Laine. While not directly a Canadien, it’s suggested that his playing style may not align with Martin St. Louis’ fast-paced system, and he is anticipated to seek a fresh start elsewhere next season as a pending unrestricted free agent. Laine has not played since undergoing core muscle surgery back in October.

With promising prospects David Reinbacher and Adam Engstrom potentially ready to join the NHL next season, it wouldn’t be surprising if current defensemen Jayden Struble and Arber Xhekaj become trade candidates this offseason. Struble has one year remaining on his $1.4 million contract, while Xhekaj is a pending restricted free agent.

Philadelphia Flyers and Trevor Zegras: Ongoing Contract Talks

According to recent insights from hockey analyst Elliotte Friedman, the Philadelphia Flyers have initiated discussions with restricted free agent forward Trevor Zegras regarding a new contract. While a deal is not reported to be imminent, conversations have definitely commenced.

Friedman notes that Zegras’s recent performance, including a crucial overtime goal, is only increasing his market value. Despite the ongoing negotiations, there’s a strong belief that an agreement will ultimately be reached, highlighting the positive fit between Zegras and the Flyers. Both sides are currently “grinding away” to finalize the terms of the deal.
