Managerial Movements: Departures and GM Candidates

Peter Chiarelli, formerly the Vice President of Hockey Operations for the St. Louis Blues, has departed the organization. He is now considered a candidate for the vacant General Manager position with the Nashville Predators. Concurrently, Kevin Maxwell, who served as a pro scout and AHL General Manager for the Blues, has also left the team and is reportedly expected to rejoin the New York Rangers in a management capacity.

Nashville Predators Taking Deliberate Approach to GM Search

The Nashville Predators are reportedly taking a patient and thorough approach to their General Manager search. The team has engaged with approximately 15 potential candidates and intends to take as much time as necessary to ensure they find the ideal individual for the role. While there is a possibility that a new GM could be appointed before the June draft, the Predators are comfortable with current General Manager Barry Trotz overseeing the draft if the search process extends beyond that timeline.

Coaches Rick Bowness and Lindy Ruff Seek New Deals

Veteran coaches Rick Bowness and Lindy Ruff, both of whom have guided their teams to strong seasons, are currently in need of new contracts. Rick Bowness, who had previously retired two years ago due to health considerations, has led the Columbus Blue Jackets to playoff contention. He is believed to be interested in returning next season, which would necessitate a new agreement as his current deal was only to finish the season. Similarly, Lindy Ruff has steered the Buffalo Sabres into a playoff spot and will also require a new contract. While the Sabres' General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen has not commented on the situation, Ruff himself has indicated that his focus remains solely on the current game-by-game performance and has not yet looked ahead to future contract discussions.

Coaches Approaching Contract End and Potential Hot Seats

A notable group of NHL coaches will be entering the final year of their contracts next season, including Joel Quenneville (Ducks), Jared Bednar (Avalanche), John Hynes (Wild), Martin St. Louis (Canadiens), Andrew Brunette (Predators), Ryan Warsofsky (Sharks), Andre Tourigney (Utah), Bruce Cassidy (Vegas), Spencer Carbery (Capitals), and Scott Arniel (Jets). Meanwhile, Toronto Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube is secured under contract through the 2027-28 season, though the future of Leafs GM Brad Treliving, who has just one year remaining on his deal, remains uncertain despite Berube's reportedly strong relationship with CEO Keith Pelley. Kris Knoblauch, who signed a three-year extension with the Edmonton Oilers in October and has guided them to consecutive Stanley Cup Finals appearances, is said to be navigating some internal discontent among his top players. Additionally, Pete DeBoer is actively seeking to return to coaching and is considered a strong candidate to lead an NHL team next season.
