Predators GM Search, Coaching Contracts, and Hot Seat Updates
Personnel Changes for the Blues
Peter Chiarelli, the former Vice President of Hockey Operations for the St. Louis Blues, has departed the team and is now being considered for the General Manager position with the Nashville Predators. Kevin Maxwell, who served as a pro scout and AHL General Manager for the Blues, has also left the organization and is expected to assume a management role with the New York Rangers.
Predators Taking Time with GM Search
Reports indicate that the Nashville Predators are adopting a deliberate approach in their search for a new General Manager. The club has already interviewed approximately 15 candidates and plans to dedicate as much time as necessary to identify the right individual for the role. Although a new GM might be appointed before the June draft, the Predators are content with current General Manager Barry Trotz overseeing the draft if the selection process extends beyond that timeframe.
Contract Status for Coaches Rick Bowness and Lindy Ruff
Rick Bowness, who had retired from coaching two years prior due to personal and his wife's health issues, has made a notable comeback, steering the Columbus Blue Jackets towards a potential playoff spot. He reportedly desires to continue coaching next season, which would require a new contract as his current agreement was only for the remainder of the present season. In a similar vein, Lindy Ruff, coach of the Buffalo Sabres, has guided his team into a playoff position and is also in need of a new contract. While Sabres GM Jarmo Kekalainen refrained from discussing Ruff's contractual situation, Ruff himself communicated via text that he is focused entirely on the immediate future, approaching it "one game at a time."
Coaches Entering Final Contract Year and Those Under Scrutiny
A number of NHL coaches are slated to enter the final year of their contracts next season. These include Joel Quenneville (Ducks), Jared Bednar (Avalanche), John Hynes (Wild), Martin St. Louis (Canadiens), Andrew Brunette (Predators), Ryan Warsofsky (Sharks), Andre Tourigney (Utah), Bruce Cassidy (Vegas), Spencer Carbery (Capitals), and Scott Arniel (Jets).
In contrast, Toronto Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube is securely under contract until the 2027-28 season. Nevertheless, the future of Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving, with only one year left on his contract, remains unclear, despite Berube's reportedly strong relationship with CEO and President Keith Pelley.
Kris Knoblauch, head coach of the Edmonton Oilers, signed a three-year contract extension last October. While he has led the team to consecutive Stanley Cup Finals appearances, reports suggest some underlying discontent among the team's top players.
Lastly, Pete DeBoer is actively pursuing a return to coaching and is widely expected to be behind the bench of an NHL team next season.
