The Vegas Golden Knights have announced a significant coaching change, dismissing head coach Bruce Cassidy and immediately naming John Tortorella as his successor.

This strategic move by General Manager Kelly McCrimmon occurred shortly after the Golden Knights’ defeat to the Washington Capitals, a game where former Golden Knights goaltender Logan Thompson played a key role. The decision also revives discussions about the team’s choice of Adin Hill over Thompson.

The timing of this coaching change, late in the season, draws parallels to the decisive tactics of former General Manager Lou Lamoriello. He famously replaced Robbie Ftorek as head coach of the New Jersey Devils with only seven games left in the 1999-2000 season, a move that culminated in a Stanley Cup victory. Lamoriello also replaced Claude Julien in 2007 while the Devils were second in the Eastern Conference, even taking over coaching duties himself for the final three games. While rare, such late-season changes are not unprecedented, especially given the Golden Knights’ current underperformance, as they sit only four points ahead of the Los Angeles Kings for third in the Pacific Division.

Cassidy, who had one year remaining on his contract, joined the Golden Knights in the summer of 2022 after his departure from the Boston Bruins. He led the team to a Stanley Cup Championship in his inaugural season, but now finds himself without a job again.
In a press release, GM Kelly McCrimmon stated: “We thank Bruce Cassidy for his dedication to our hockey club and community over the past four seasons. Under Bruce’s leadership, we reached our ultimate goal in 2023 by bringing a Stanley Cup to Vegas. Bruce will forever be remembered with the utmost regard by our organization for what was accomplished here.
With the stretch run of the 2025-26 regular season upon us, we believe that a change is necessary for us to return to the level of play that is expected of our club. With John Tortorella, we bring in a Stanley Cup Champion as well as one of the most experienced and respected coaches in the NHL. His guidance will be a great asset to our team at the pivotal point in the season we currently face. We look forward to welcoming John to Vegas.”
This swift change isn’t entirely unexpected, as the Golden Knights organization has a history of high expectations and proactive coaching decisions. Since their inception in the 2017-18 season, John Tortorella will become the franchise’s fourth head coach, following Gerard Gallant, Pete DeBoer, and Bruce Cassidy.
Vegas has been in existence for 8-plus seasons with:
– 7 playoff appearances
– 2 conference finals
– 2 trips to the final
– 1 Stanley CupJohn Tortorella will now be their 4th head coach. And people think there’s pressure playing in Toronto?#VegasBorn

The team’s eight-plus seasons have seen seven playoff appearances, four conference finals, two Stanley Cup Final appearances, and one Stanley Cup, underscoring GM McCrimmon’s emphasis on winning above all else.
The team’s recent defensive struggles were a contributing factor to the coaching change. The absence of key players like Alex Pietrangelo has impacted the defensive corps, with Nic Hauge and Zach Whitecloud also missing from their usual form. Noah Hanifin is still adapting to the team, and Rasmus Andersson, acquired from Calgary, has yet to fully find his form in Vegas, raising questions about his long-term future with the team. Despite being known for making significant moves at the trade deadline, the Golden Knights were relatively quiet this year, with McCrimmon apparently satisfied with the goaltending trio of Akira Schmid, Adin Hill, and Carter Hart. However, Tortorella’s mandate is clear: to instill better, more structured defense into the team’s play.
Tortorella, a Stanley Cup winner with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004, brings a wealth of experience from coaching stints with the New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Vancouver Canucks. He aims to replicate his past success in Vegas, working with familiar faces such as Jack Eichel and Noah Hanifin, both of whom were part of a Team USA Olympic Gold Medal-winning team.
