Mirra Andreeva defeats Frech; into Madrid last 16 for third straight year

Sports News

Seventh seed Mirra Andreeva demonstrated remarkable patience to overcome the challenge posed by Magdalena Frech, winning their match 7-5, 6-3. This victory secures Andreeva`s spot in the Mutua Madrid Open last 16 for the third year in a row, maintaining her impressive streak at the tournament.

Andreeva holds an undefeated record in Madrid before the fourth round. Her breakthrough came in 2023 as a 15-year-old wildcard ranked 312, where she reached this stage, gaining significant public attention. The following year, she improved on this by advancing to her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal. Now a player with two WTA 1000 titles to her name, Andreeva extended this record by defeating world No. 27 Frech for the second time in 2025.

Much like their previous tough three-set encounter in the Australian Open third round (which Andreeva won 6-2, 1-6, 6-2), this match was a hard-fought battle that tested Andreeva`s ability to remain calm under pressure. At moments, particularly during the first set, the 17-year-old showed visible frustration in response to Frech`s strong defensive play and retrieval skills. However, Andreeva successfully managed to shake off these moments of difficulty and secure her win in 1 hour and 41 minutes.

“I was very, very nervous,” Andreeva admitted in her on-court interview. “I still struggle to find my best tennis in Madrid. [But I`m] super happy that I could manage to play consistent throughout the whole match.”

In the fourth round, Andreeva is set to face either the 18th seed, Liudmila Samsonova, or qualifier Yuliia Starodubtseva.
