Milan is making headlines with ambitious plans to construct a cutting-edge 18,000-seat arena, specifically designed to accommodate a potential NBA Europe franchise. This initiative comes as RedBird Capital prepares to decide in the coming weeks whether to submit a preliminary non-binding offer to the NBA for a franchise in the new European basketball league, anticipated to launch in the autumn of 2027.
The development of a new, modern venue is deemed essential for this project. The existing Assago Forum is considered outdated, and the Santa Giulia venue, built for the Winter Olympics, is not suitable for basketball requirements.
NBA Europe mandates a minimum capacity of 15,000 seats for its arenas, with projections suggesting the Milan facility could comfortably host between 17,000 and 18,000 spectators. Beyond mere capacity, the league imposes stringent standards across various aspects:
- Technology: State-of-the-art systems for fan engagement and operational efficiency.
- Spectator Services: Premium amenities and a superior fan experience.
- Media Infrastructure: Robust facilities to support broadcasting and global media coverage.
Crucially, the new arena is envisioned as a multi-purpose complex. It would serve as a prominent venue for concerts and other major events, aiming to host at least 150 to 200 events annually. This diversified usage is considered vital for ensuring profitability and sustained revenue generation, making it a cornerstone of the entire project.
However, the construction of such an extensive facility will require approximately three to four years to complete. This timeline necessitates the identification of a transitional solution to host a team should Milan secure a franchise before the new arena is ready. Nevertheless, the prospect of the NBA establishing a presence in Europe has already ignited considerable excitement within the Lombard capital.
