Megan Gustafson, who is also engaged to French player David DiLeo, became a Spanish citizen in 2023. She proudly represented her adopted country at the Paris Olympics, where she led her team in scoring with 18.0 points per game and was the top rebounder with 9.3 boards.
“It’s fantastic. I feel everyone has welcomed me with open arms, even though I’m originally from the United States,” Gustafson told Mundo Deportivo. “Obviously, FIBA rules allow for acquiring Spanish nationality, and I’m incredibly grateful for that, as it has allowed me to build amazing connections with these players, with the coaching staff, and to have extraordinary experiences. It’s thanks to this that I’m an Olympian and that I represent a great country.”
Gustafson was sidelined from EuroBasket 2025 due to an injury. After winning a European title with Fenerbahçe, she is now a teammate of Carla Leite on the Portland Fire in the WNBA. She is slated to wear the national jersey again for the upcoming FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin this summer.
“As far as I know, I believe so. I hope to be healthy, fingers crossed. But yes, last year I was really disappointed to miss EuroBasket; I had a very bad ankle injury, I was out for almost three months, and unfortunately, I couldn’t participate. But I fully intend to be at the World Cup if I’m selected.”
