Real Madrid stars Kylian Mbappe and Antonio Rudiger are eligible to play against Arsenal in the upcoming Champions League quarter-final next week. They have received suspended one-match bans from UEFA.
UEFA initiated an investigation following accusations from Atletico Madrid regarding “indecent conduct” by Mbappe, Rudiger, Vinicius Jr, and Dani Ceballos after Real Madrid`s victory in the Champions League last 16.
Rudiger was accused of making a throat-slitting gesture, while Mbappe was reported for touching his genitals in a derogatory way. Vinicius Jr and Ceballos were also under investigation for their conduct towards Atletico fans.
Initially, there was a possibility that all four players could be suspended for the first leg against Arsenal.
However, UEFA`s disciplinary inspector cleared Vinicius Jr, while Mbappe, Rudiger, and Ceballos were found guilty of “violating the basic rules of decent conduct.”
Ultimately, UEFA`s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body decided against severe penalties. Rudiger and Mbappe each received a one-match ban, suspended for 12 months, and fines of £34,000 and £25,000 respectively. Ceballos was fined £17,000 without a ban.
According to UEFA, disciplinary proceedings were opened against Rudiger, Mbappe, and Ceballos for violating basic rules of decent conduct.
The suspended bans mean Mbappe and Rudiger are available for the match against Arsenal, which is unwelcome news for Arsenal fans who hoped for their absence due to the team`s defensive injuries.
Arsenal faces a defensive crisis with Gabriel Magalhaes injured and Ben White and Riccardo Calafiori doubtful for the Real Madrid game.
The defensive uncertainties for Arsenal increase as they prepare to face Real Madrid in the Champions League.
