On Coach Vassilis Spanoulis’ Mid-Season Departure
Matthew Strazel expressed his disappointment regarding Coach Vassilis Spanoulis’ decision to leave the club mid-season. “Of course, I was upset,” Strazel stated. “We wanted him to stay until the end of the season. But we are all human, and we understood that the situation was difficult for him, just as it was for us.” He added, “On the other hand, I understand him. He has a family, children, a wife… and he was far from them. Given all the problems we encountered, I understand his choice. But obviously, I would have liked him to stay with us.” Strazel also highlighted their strong relationship: “We got along really well. I like this kind of coach; he is very demanding. We had some disagreements when he was here, but he always spoke with his experience. I listened to him a lot, and I think I learned a great deal from him.”
On His Partnership with Mike James
Strazel described his collaboration with Mike James as “excellent.” He remarked, “In terms of talent, he is incredible. Just seeing him train every day is already amazing.” He characterized their bond as “like an older brother and his younger brother. He helps me both on and off the court. We have a very good relationship.” Strazel views his role alongside James positively: “Playing the role of Robin next to him is a wonderful experience.” He also shared a recent interaction: “He texted me a few days ago to tell me I was doing good work. I want to continue like this and await his return.”
On the Possibility of Reaching the EuroLeague Final Four
Regarding the prospect of reaching the EuroLeague Final Four, similar to last year, Strazel confidently stated, “Absolutely. The hardest part will be the next few weeks and the qualifying matches. Whether through play-in games or the playoffs, that is the main objective. Once everyone is back, it will be easier to play our basketball and reach the Final Four.”
On the Future of the Roca Team
Discussing the future of the Roca Team, Strazel indicated a period of uncertainty. “Without going into details, many players are in their final year of contract, and some will certainly leave,” he revealed. “We don’t know what the future holds for us here in Monaco. We have given our all together, and perhaps it’s time for us to seek new experiences.”
On His Personal Contract Situation
Addressing his personal situation, particularly his contract extending until 2029, Strazel affirmed, “I have a contract with Monaco, and I don’t know what the future holds for me.” He concluded by keeping his options open: “I don’t close any doors, but for now, I am here.”
