German football legend Mats Hummels has declared the end of his professional playing career.

At 36, Hummels concluded his impressive 18-year journey in football with an emotional announcement shared on social media.

The central defender, currently with Roma, shared a video compilation of his career highlights featuring moments from his time with Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and the German national team.

He then officially confirmed his retirement from professional football at the season`s end.

Hummels expressed his feelings, saying: “I`m currently overwhelmed with emotion. The unavoidable moment in every footballer`s career has arrived.”

“After a fulfilling 18 years and all the incredible experiences football has given me, I am retiring this summer.”

“Seeing these highlights reminds me of the immense significance of this journey and how truly special it has been to experience all of it.”

Throughout his illustrious career, Hummels secured nearly every major honor available in football.

The former Germany international`s trophy cabinet includes two Bundesliga titles and two German Cups with Dortmund, in addition to reaching two Champions League finals with the club.

He also added three league titles and one cup during his time with Bayern Munich, where his professional career began in 2007.

A crowning achievement of his career came in 2014 when he lifted the World Cup with Germany, contributing to their 1-0 victory over Argentina in the final, adding to his 78 international caps.

Reflecting on his successful career, Hummels acknowledged the crucial roles of his coaches, teammates, and supporters.

Hummels further commented: “Success requires many elements: being guided by the right coaches at the opportune times, maintaining peak fitness, and being surrounded by supportive teammates.”

“I am indebted to numerous individuals and coaches who have significantly shaped my path. Without them, my career would not have achieved such heights.”

“Beyond the games, the moments shared afterward are equally cherished.”

“Whether in the locker room or celebrating victories on the field, especially with the fans and in front of the Sudtribune [Yellow Wall], these unique moments are irreplaceable and will forever remain in my memory.”

Hummels struggled to contain his emotions as he reflected on his accomplished career.

He admitted, “It`s already deeply emotional for me, and I anticipate even stronger emotions when it officially concludes.”

“Having experienced this career is incredible and unparalleled. It`s a feeling that I believe nothing can replace.”

“The fans truly make it all worthwhile. Playing in front of such passionate fans has been a privilege, and their absence will be profoundly felt.”
