Madrid Open Welcomes Back Sabalenka and Swiatek After Epic Showdown

Sports News

A year following their memorable final, Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek are set to lead the entry list for the Madrid Open. Last year`s Mutua Madrid Open final witnessed Iga Swiatek narrowly defeat Aryna Sabalenka in a thrilling 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(7) match. This intense battle, lasting 3 hours and 11 minutes, was celebrated as one of the most captivating matches of 2024.

Will we see a repeat performance in 2025? The world`s top two players are returning and topping this year`s entry list. Both Swiatek and Sabalenka have secured major titles since their Madrid clash, with Swiatek winning at Roland Garros and Sabalenka at the US Open. They competed against each other twice more in 2024, with Swiatek winning again in Rome and Sabalenka avenging her loss in Cincinnati. Their Cincinnati match marked their 12th encounter, and they haven`t faced off since.

Swiatek and Sabalenka, champions of the Madrid Open in 2021 and 2023 respectively, will be joined in the main draw by two other past champions: three-time winner Petra Kvitova and Ons Jabeur, who secured her first WTA 1000 title here in 2022. Adding to the star power, eleven more Grand Slam champions will participate, bringing the total to fifteen. These champions include Coco Gauff, Madison Keys, Elena Rybakina, Barbora Krejcikova, Jelena Ostapenko, Victoria Azarenka, Marketa Vondrousova, Emma Raducanu, Naomi Osaka, and Bianca Andreescu.

The entire Top 72 players from the PIF WTA Rankings as of March 17th have entered the Madrid main draw. Additionally, four players are using special rankings to enter: Kvitova, returning from maternity leave last month; Sorana Cirstea, recovering from foot surgery in 2024; Andreescu, whose 2025 season start was delayed due to an emergency appendectomy; and former No. 11 Anastasija Sevastova, who has been absent since an ACL tear last February, shortly into her comeback from maternity leave.

The final direct entry is Jaqueline Cristian, ranked No. 72. The first ten alternates for the main draw are, in order: Katie Volynets, Caroline Garcia, Caroline Dolehide, Eva Lys, Kamilla Rakhimova, Zeynep Sonmez, Emiliana Arango, Maya Joint, Laura Siegemund, and Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
