Monday`s highly anticipated Round of 16 action at the Mutua Madrid Open was unexpectedly halted by a widespread power outage affecting parts of Spain, Portugal, and southern France. This forced the suspension of six matches. Only two matches were completed before the suspension: Coco Gauff defeated Belinda Bencic, and Mirra Andreeva held off Yuliia Starodubtseva.
The remaining six matches were successfully completed on Tuesday. Top seeds Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek were among those who advanced to the quarterfinals. The day provided a full schedule of play, concluding a round that was delayed, but ultimately not derailed, by the unusual interruption.
