L’Elan Béarnais legends, including Mathieu Bisseni, Freddy Hufnagel, Christian Ortega, Paul Henderson, Didier Gadou, Philippe Laperche, and the 85-year-old club president Pierre Seillant, were honored in the Palais des Sports to nearly 5,500 spectators. Michaël Piétrus was also present in the stands as a “child of the club” and uncle to Ilian, who plays for JA Vichy. JA Vichy kept the suspense alive for a long time, trailing only 65-62 with 2 minutes and 30 seconds left. However, Bastien Pinault ultimately tipped the game in favor of the Béarnais.
“It was an important match for several reasons,” Pinault recalled to La République des Pyrénées. “We were celebrating the 40th anniversary of a very beautiful historic victory for the club, and we were determined to win to honor that history. Beyond the symbolism, we needed to continue our unbeaten home streak and, most importantly, start preparing for the playoffs. We always progress much faster through victory than through defeat. I found the team very composed tonight, both in managing the tempo and defensively. We felt a real team cohesion on the court.”
L’Elan Béarnais will conclude its regular season on Friday against the league leader, Roanne. After that, the team will fully focus on the promotion playoffs.
