MIAMI – In a Saturday afternoon match at the Miami Open, rising American star Ashlyn Krueger delivered a standout performance, while a seasoned tour player maintained her consistent form.
Ashlyn Krueger progressed to the Round of 16 by defeating Leylah Fernandez 6-1, 7-5. Her next opponent will be the winner of the match between No. 9 seed Zheng Qinwen and qualifier Taylor Townsend.
The 20-year-old American matched her best WTA 1000 result, previously achieved in Toronto last year. Krueger has now secured her seventh victory against Top 30 players this season, surpassing her total from previous seasons. Only Madison Keys, Mirra Andreeva, and Iga Swiatek have more such wins.
Krueger`s powerful strokes were evident once again against Fernandez. Her serve remained unbroken, and she boasts the third-highest number of winners this season with 69, trailing only McCartney Kessler (84) and Hailey Baptiste (78).
To summarize, Krueger`s recent victories include wins against Renata Zarazua, No. 7 seed and former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, and now No. 26 seed Fernandez, a 2021 US Open finalist.
Are these kinds of wins becoming expected for Krueger?
“Yes,” Krueger stated afterward. “In each match, I focus less on my opponent`s reputation and achievements. Winning is rewarding and confirms that my off-court efforts are paying off.”
Regarding her potential next opponents, Krueger commented:
“Taylor is a close friend. She’s versatile, mixes up her play, and is a lefty. She’s a tough competitor. Qinwen is also strong, with a big serve and great overall game. Either opponent will present a very different challenge.”
Krueger had a successful Saturday, also partnering with Jessica Pegula in doubles to rally and beat Anna Danilina and Irina Khromacheva 2-6, 6-3, 10-7. Before her Monday singles match, she and Pegula are scheduled to play doubles again on Sunday.
