Top lightweight contender Arman Tsarukyan has confirmed that Khamzat Chimaev has no immediate plans to move up to the light heavyweight division (205 pounds).
Following his recent title loss at UFC 328, Chimaev had initially expressed interest in campaigning in the 205-pound division. However, according to his close friend and training partner Tsarukyan, Chimaev has since reconsidered his options. The primary focus for “Borz” is now to secure a rematch with Sean Strickland and reclaim his lost glory.
Speaking on the JAXXON Podcast, Tsarukyan stated that Chimaev is more motivated than ever and is setting aside aspirations of becoming a two-division champion for the time being. “Khamzat wants to do the rematch,” Tsarukyan said. “His head is ready to go, and he’s more motivated than before.”
While Khamzat Chimaev is eager for an immediate rematch with Sean Strickland, the current two-time UFC middleweight champion has a different perspective. Strickland, after regaining the middleweight belt, indicated to Full Send MMA that Chimaev needs to secure a couple of victories before being considered for another title shot. “As of always, you go get a couple W’s and I’ll see you again, that’s how it works,” Strickland commented. “I truly believe ranking systems matter in the UFC, and whenever they don’t, it belittles the sport. So go get a couple W’s and I’ll see you again.”
