Jack Della Maddalena has finally clarified the reason for his visibly disappointed demeanor during his bout against Islam Makhachev. Last year, “JDM” became the 170-pound champion by defeating Belal Muhammad, a training partner and close associate of Makhachev. This victory prompted Makhachev to relinquish his lightweight title and ascend to the welterweight division. However, Della Maddalena’s championship reign was short-lived, as he was unseated by Makhachev in the latter’s welterweight debut at UFC 322.
In their championship clash, the Dagestani wrestling phenom, Islam Makhachev, displayed overwhelming dominance. He accumulated an impressive 19 minutes and 10 seconds of control time, executed four takedowns, and landed a total of 140 strikes, ultimately securing a unanimous decision victory.
During the later championship rounds, Della Maddalena’s evident disappointment led both commentators and fans to speculate about a potential injury preventing him from defending takedowns and recovering his footing. Prior to the final round, his coach even urged “JDM” to shed his “sad look” if he intended to avoid losing the title and give his all in the remaining five minutes.
In a recent interview, Jack Della Maddalena confessed that his somber expression stemmed from a sense of underperformance at UFC 322. He felt he couldn’t execute his planned strategy, which contributed to his disappointed appearance and made him seem defeated in the later stages of the fight. He explicitly stated, “It was simply a feeling of disappointment because I couldn’t achieve what I intended, realizing I was delivering a subpar performance. Reflecting on it, there are definitely things I should have done more.”
Jack Della Maddalena Prepared to “Outclass” His Next Opponent
Looking ahead, Jack Della Maddalena is keen on a swift rematch with Islam Makhachev to reclaim the title he lost at UFC 322. However, his immediate path to another championship opportunity requires him to overcome knockout specialist Carlos Prates at UFC Perth on May 2. Della Maddalena expressed confidence, believing he possesses all the necessary tools to decisively “outclass” Prates. He remarked, “Carlos Prates is a fan favorite for valid reasons; he’s an exciting fighter. This will be an excellent striking contest between two top contenders. I am confident in my skillset to defeat him and believe I can outperform him.”
