Inter Milan Plans Squad Refresh: Veterans Nearing Exit

Football News

Inter Milan is reportedly preparing for a significant squad overhaul, as several veteran players are approaching the end of their contracts. The club’s management appears inclined to part ways with Francesco Acerbi, Stefan De Vrij, and Matteo Darmian.

The two veteran center-backs, Acerbi and De Vrij, have recently found themselves playing a less prominent role, with younger talents like Yann Aurel Bisseck stepping up. Their performances under coach Christian Chivu have also been inconsistent. Both were previously rumored to be targets for Al-Hilal when Inter sought to bring back Joao Cancelo.

Matteo Darmian, a versatile fullback, has served as a reliable backup for several years. However, he missed a significant portion of the recent season due to a calf injury, at a time when Inter could have greatly benefited from his presence, especially during Denzel Dumfries’ prolonged absence. It is speculated that the two Italian players (Acerbi and Darmian) may consider retirement, while De Vrij, the Dutchman, is expected to attract interest from other clubs as a free agent.

Goalkeeper Yann Sommer also faces an uncertain future as his contract nears its end. He might remain at the club, but likely only if he accepts a reduced role as a backup and agrees to a pay cut from his current €2.5 million salary. Inter is actively pursuing Guglielmo Vicario as a primary target for the goalkeeper position, with Elia Caprile identified as a strong alternative.

Beyond potential Serie A signings, such as Mario Gila (who is also a target for AC Milan), Inter is exploring options among promising young talents. One such player is Lautaro Rivero from River Plate, who is reportedly poised for a move to Europe this summer.

This squad overhaul reflects a strategic shift that Inter had reportedly considered last year but postponed to maintain squad stability after a coaching change. While many of these veterans may have reached the end of their peak contributions, replacing several key players in a single transfer window will undoubtedly present a significant challenge for the club.
