Hat Trick for Osorio in Bogota

Sports News

Camila Osorio, Colombia`s top tennis player, reigned supreme at home, winning her third Copa Colsanitas Zurich title in Bogota. She successfully defended her championship on Sunday.

As the No. 2 seed, Osorio defeated Polish qualifier Katarzyna Kawa in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 in the final, marking her third Bogota title after victories in 2021 and the previous year.

Osorio is now the second player to achieve three or more singles titles in Bogota, moving closer to Fabiola Zuluaga`s record of four titles.

A Dramatic Journey: Osorio faced a tough challenge early in the tournament. In her second match against Emina Bektas, she was on the verge of defeat, but managed to recover and win after a grueling match lasting 2 hours and 31 minutes.

After that close call, Osorio`s performance improved significantly. She won her subsequent matches against Tatjana Maria in the quarterfinals and Julia Riera in the semifinals without dropping a set.

The final match was also decided in straight sets. Osorio secured the first set with an ace and quickly gained a significant lead in the second, going up 3-0.

Kawa fought back, breaking Osorio`s serve once, but couldn`t level the score. Despite a moment of suspense on Osorio`s third championship point due to an overturned double fault, Osorio ultimately won on her fourth championship point after an hour and 23 minutes.

Osorio concluded the final with 22 winning shots compared to Kawa`s 14. She also effectively converted five out of ten break point opportunities, securing her victory in Bogota.

Despite losing the final, Kawa, aged 32, had a successful week, reaching her second WTA singles final after nearly six years. Having almost dropped out of the Top 300 rankings last November, she is now close to re-entering the Top 150.

The tournament also highlighted the emergence of 16-year-old American Julieta Pareja, who reached the semifinals in her WTA main draw debut before losing to Kawa. Pareja is the youngest WTA semifinalist since Coco Gauff in 2019.

Spanish Duo Wins Doubles Title: Cristina Bucsa and Sara Sorribes Tormo from Spain, the top-seeded team, won the Copa Colsanitas Zurich doubles title. They narrowly defeated Laura Pigossi of Brazil and Irina Bara of Romania in a close final.

This is the second title for Bucsa and Sorribes Tormo as a team, following their WTA 1000 Madrid victory last year. They also won a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics together.

For both Bucsa and Sorribes Tormo, this is their sixth WTA doubles title.
