GM Candidates for the Predators, and the Blackhawks Are Already Loaded With Young Defensemen

Five Likely GM Candidates for the Nashville Predators

After a four-month search, the Nashville Predators have yet to identify a front-runner for their General Manager position. Both internal and external candidates are being considered, with an announcement anticipated by the end of June, coinciding with the NHL draft.

Here are five probable GM candidates for the Predators:

  • Darren Yorke: Assistant General Manager, Carolina Hurricanes
  • Brett Peterson: Assistant General Manager, Florida Panthers
  • Bill Scott: Assistant General Manager, Edmonton Oilers
  • Evan Gold: Assistant General Manager, Boston Bruins
  • Ryan Martin: Assistant General Manager, New York Rangers

The Chicago Blackhawks May Miss Out on a Top Forward at No. 4

Following the draft lottery, the Chicago Blackhawks will select fourth overall. With a strong likelihood that forwards will be chosen in the top three picks, the next tier of available prospects is expected to be defensemen, including Carson Carels, Chase Reid, Alberts Smits, and Keaton Verhoeff.

The Blackhawks already have a deep pool of young defensemen under contract, with seven players under 25: Artyom Levshunov, Sam Rinzel, Alex Vlasic, Wyatt Kaiser, Kevin Korchinski, Louis Crevier, and Ethan Del Mastro. Adding another defenseman to this group would necessitate future roster decisions. Given that Levshunov and Rinzel are right-handed shots, the team might lean towards a left-handed defenseman like Carels if they choose to draft at No. 4.

General Manager Kyle Davidson expressed the team’s focus on acquiring the best talent for long-term success and optimal team fit, regardless of position.

“We’re looking for the best players and who is going to be the best, not right away, but long term and who is going to be the best fit,” Davidson stated. “So there’s going to be competition if that’s the direction we go and we were to draft another defenseman, same thing if we draft another centerman or winger. It’s a competition.”

“We want to be the best team we can be. The way we do that is by creating competition. Again, if we’ve got too many players we like, that’s a good problem to have and we’ll solve that one. Because again, good players are something that’s in high demand, so we can figure that out. We’re just looking for the best players, then we’ll find what the optimal mix is at the right time.”

Davidson also indicated openness to trade discussions for moving up or down in the draft order.

The Blackhawks could potentially add a top-six forward by signing Roman Kantserov from the KHL. While drafting either Gavin McKenna or Ivar Stenberg would have bolstered their forward group, the opportunity might be limited at the fourth pick.
