Alex Ovechkin Focused on the Season; Decision to Come Later
The future of Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin, the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer, remains uncertain. While there was a slight misstep early in the season, Ovechkin has not yet indicated whether the 2025-26 season will mark his final year in the league.
Ovechkin is currently in the final year of a five-year, $47.5 million contract signed on July 27, 2021, making him a pending unrestricted free agent. This season, he has recorded 51 points (24 goals, 27 assists) in 68 games, experiencing periods of inconsistent scoring. However, much like Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Ovechkin will be afforded ample time to deliberate his future.
The recent trade of John Carlson from the Capitals to the Anaheim Ducks has undoubtedly weighed on Ovechkin. He conveyed to Tom Gulitti of NHL.com after the trade deadline that while the move impacted him, he is unsure if it will influence his decision regarding his continued play. “I don’t know,” Ovechkin stated. “I’m still here, so we’ll see what’s going to happen. It’s a hard one.”
Washington Capitals General Manager Chris Patrick clarified on NHL Network’s First Shift that Alex Ovechkin’s future with the team rests entirely with him, and the situation remains unchanged. The team awaits his decision when he feels ready to communicate it.
Patrick explained that, transparently, the situation is “status quo.” Ovechkin is currently focused on the season, playing games, and aiming for the playoffs. He plans to engage in discussions with his family, Ted Leonsis, Brian MacLellan, and Patrick himself once he has fully processed his thoughts. The organization respects this process and will wait for him to announce his decision when the time is right. This sentiment aligns with his feelings expressed after the March 6th trade deadline.
Patrick added, “Alex and I will just talk about what happened, and he’ll be able to vent if he wants to vent. I have no sense of what he’s feeling. The great thing about Alex is he’s pretty singularly focused on his team, on his teammates, on playing games and on trying to win, and that’s all he’s been doing.”
As the Washington Capitals battle for a playoff spot, attention will undoubtedly turn to Alex Ovechkin once the current season concludes.
