FC Barcelona Basketball Academy Targeted by NCAA NIL Deals

American universities are increasingly attracting European basketball prospects with substantial Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) compensation. This trend is impacting even the most renowned clubs, with players from FC Barcelona’s academy now opting for the NCAA. Following in the footsteps of recent departures like Lithuanian Kasparas Jakucionis (now with the Miami Heat), Raúl Villar (Charlotte 49ers), and Dame Sarr (Duke), two more emerging talents from Barcelona’s development program are set to join American college basketball.

One of these talents is Sayon Keita, an 18-year-old Malian center standing at 2.12 meters. Keita made his senior team debut for Barça last season, featuring in seven Liga Endesa games and six Euroleague matches. He has showcased his ability to finish effectively around the rim, leveraging his imposing physique and impressive wingspan.

The other prospect is Joaquim Boumtje-Boumtje, an American power forward of Cameroonian descent. His father, Ruben, previously played in the NBA for the Portland Trail Blazers. The younger Boumtje-Boumtje, who stands at 2.11 meters and is nearing his 17th birthday, has yet to debut with FC Barcelona’s senior squad. However, he has established himself as a pivotal player in the youth categories over recent seasons, earning multiple MVP titles.

Another highly-touted prospect, 14-year-old Mohamed Dabone (2.10 meters), is also reportedly on the radar and could be the next to make the transition to the NCAA.
