At the beginning of the 2024-25 NHL season, many predicted a triumphant return to the playoffs for the Detroit Red Wings, a team with a rich history in the league.
However, with less than two weeks remaining in the season, their playoff aspirations are fading, although mathematically they are still in contention.
This Friday night, they will face the Carolina Hurricanes at home (7 p.m. ET, ESPN+), in a crucial game to close the gap with the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers, who are battling for the final wild-card spot.
Currently, the Red Wings have 75 points, six points behind the Canadiens, and are tied with Montreal in regulation wins with 26.
The challenge intensifies for the Red Wings after the Hurricanes game. Their remaining games are exclusively against teams currently holding playoff spots: two games against the Florida Panthers, as well as matches against the Canadiens, Tampa Bay Lightning, Dallas Stars, New Jersey Devils, and Toronto Maple Leafs. While some of these teams might ease up after securing their playoff berths, it`s far from an ideal end-of-season schedule for a team trying to break into the playoffs.
Nevertheless, a victory this Friday could provide a significant emotional boost and rally support for a playoff push. The question is, can they pull it off?
With the regular season concluding on April 17, we are providing ongoing coverage of the NHL playoff race. We will keep you updated on all playoff scenarios and the teams vying for position in the 2025 NHL draft lottery.

Race for the No. 1 Pick
The NHL utilizes a draft lottery to determine the first-round order, meaning the last-place team isn`t guaranteed the top pick. Since 2021, teams can move up a maximum of 10 spots in the lottery, limiting eligibility for the No. 1 pick to the bottom 11 teams. For full details on the process, click here. Matthew Schaefer, a defenseman from the OHL`s Erie Otters, is currently ranked as the No. 1 draft prospect.
