Former UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson has voiced strong disapproval of the promotion`s apparent interest in arranging a fight between Ilia Topuria and Paddy Pimblett, especially considering the current landscape of the lightweight division.
Johnson argued that the next rightful contender for the lightweight championship should unequivocally be Arman Tsarukyan. He characterized the focus on Topuria and Pimblett, including their staged octagon staredown, as the UFC allowing the sport to devolve into a “reality show.”
“Obviously, Tsarukyan is the top contender for the belt,” Johnson stated, emphasizing Tsarukyan`s number one ranking in the division. He expressed his belief that the UFC is pushing the Topuria vs. Pimblett matchup onto fans primarily because “it will probably sell better,” suggesting marketability is being prioritized over the established rankings and competitive merit.
