Dalma Galfi of Hungary has won the Oeiras Ladies Open, a WTA 125 tournament, marking her first title at this level. After two previous runner-up finishes, the unseeded Galfi defeated second-seeded Katie Volynets of the United States in the final in Oeiras, Portugal. The match concluded with a score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in Galfi`s favor.
Persistent rain throughout the week disrupted the tournament schedule. However, the clay-court event successfully concluded on Sunday as planned. Galfi`s victory came after a 2-hour and 13-minute comeback in the final match.
Celebrating her significant professional achievement, Galfi, aged 26, expressed her joy in an Instagram post, stating, “Third time’s the charm.” This win marks her biggest title to date.
Previously, Galfi reached two WTA 125 finals but was defeated on both occasions. She lost to Sara Errani at the 2022 Contrexeville event and more recently to Darja Semenistaja at La Bisbal d`Emporda earlier in the same month. Notably, all of Galfi`s WTA 125 final appearances have been on clay courts, and each match extended to three sets.
In this recent victory, Galfi demonstrated resilience after losing the first set, taking control in the subsequent sets. Impressively, she successfully defended against all four break points she faced in the combined second and third sets.
Throughout the tournament, Galfi only conceded a single set, which was the first set of the final match. She has achieved victory in nine of her last ten matches, with the Oeiras title following her final appearance in La Bisbal d`Emporda two weeks prior.
Galfi, currently ranked at No. 149, is expected to climb closer to the Top 120 in the upcoming rankings update. A former Junior World Champion in 2015 and Junior US Open champion, Galfi achieved her career-high WTA ranking of No. 79 in 2022.
Adding to the local success, Portuguese sisters Francisca and Matilde Jorge successfully defended their Oeiras Ladies Open doubles title on Sunday, playing on their home ground.
The Jorge siblings had previously won their most significant career title at the same event last year. As the No. 2 seeds this year, they repeated their success, defeating Anastasia Detiuc and Patricia Maria Tig, who were unseeded, with a score of 6-1, 6-2 in a final that lasted 63 minutes.
